June 1: Slick-rock 'n roll

(click on the pictures for the high resolution version)

Thomas rented this big rig, where we could dump the bikes in. First day: the Slickrock Trail, the quintessential ride in Moab.

Malena on the slickrocks; the traction is indeed phenomenal, some hills are unbelievably steep and the right way is indicated by a dashed white line painted on the rock. The heat was scorching and of course we were on the trail during the hottest part of the day! Lots of water and a zen-like calm of mind was required...

Typical slickrock scene.
Thomas and Inge.
Thomas is sporting some ultratechnical stuff (I do have a movie of him crashing on this!).
It took me a number of attempts before I dared going down here. Many sections were like rollercoasters, using the momentum of the downhill to get up on the next hill.
The trail is also popular with jeeps and dirt bikes (we saw one guy wheelying up a hill).
A ride around the block for the picture!
